Experts predict workplaces to experience a tsunami of new technology in the next three decades, and the advent of new smart-phones and smart cameras might make even employees less likely to report accidents.

In a major new study published last week, researchers found that employers do not always use basic workplace training to develop employees as they would a child or teenager. "It does seem that we're trying to educate people through education, instead of training them through actual work experience," says study coauthor David B. Durbin, an associate professor of management at New York University's Stern School of Business. "That has a lot of implications for workplace safety."

To determine the impact on workplace safety, Durbin and his colleagues analyzed the 2010 and 2011 occupational injury reports, a subset of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration data that is maintained by the United States Department of Labor and released every two years. The database contains injuries reported on the books by federal, state and local governments and includes details about injuries including the severity of injuries, types of injury and whether or not injuries were caused by mechanical or other problems.

Durbin and his coauthors found that nearly half of the 1,600 workplace crashes reported in the data showed no indication that an injury involved any sort of training.

"This is where it gets interesting, isn't it? 'We trained a child, and we just had that child die?'" says Durbin. "I think there are a lot of people who have done all of this, but it really does get them thinking about how much their kids were trained, why they were trained, who got trained, and who's at fault."

When companies don't educate workers for problems they expect to have, Durbin says the risks are much higher: "The kids could get distracted, the elderly may do something they shouldn't do. The people at the wheel may do something they shouldn't do. The worker could injure himself or herself."

An important consideration is the extent to which young workers are trained for the kinds of job positions that don't require advanced skills. Durbin and his co-authors found that the number of injuries and deaths occurring while an employee was being trained in this regard was a lot lower than industry standard rates of about 1 in 20.

The study, "Workplace safety education: Incidents, injuries and death due to poorly designed or not-trained employees," was published in the July 2013 issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Newbury — For a project to be effective, it has to benefit people who could not afford a local business. On Wednesday, the council granted Gloucester Grant to improve the websites of 12 local businesses, a community improvement project.

"This project aims to reduce the administrative burdens on all involved," said councillor David Reichert, chair of the Burlington Economic Development Corporation board.

The project helps to remove the barriers to businesses in the community and allows new businesses to be built, said council members, including Reichert, who also represents the area.

At a news conference on Wednesday, Reichert said the project builds on his commitment to open doors to new businesses, with a number of other initiatives aimed at the area.

"There are a lot of small businesses coming into a community, and there's lots that need a lot of work to get up to a certain level of success," said Reichert. "When you get to these level of success, people get inspired to join the community and open up their doors."

The project also includes a $100,000 grant to the local business development corporation and the local business incubator, which provides a one-stop shop for entrepreneurs, said Reichert.

He said the projects will provide new jobs in the community, as well as the training that businesses need to succeed.
